Maritime Security AI Applications Reach Maturity
A comprehensive academic review published in MDPI's Information Journal on July 31, 2025 examined AI applications in maritime security from 2020-2025, revealing significant advances in threat detection capabilities. The study analyzed deep learning models including CNNs, RNNs, and Transformers processing satellite imagery, AIS data, SAR, radar, and sensor inputs from unmanned vehicles. Security applications: AI systems now identify smuggling patterns, illegal fishing activities, human trafficking routes, and environmental threats with unprecedented accuracy. Multi-modal fusion architectures combine diverse data sources for comprehensive maritime domain awareness. Emerging threats: The review highlighted growing concerns about AI-driven cyber attacks targeting maritime infrastructure, with state-aligned actors developing sophisticated intrusion capabilities. The dual nature of AI as both security solution and potential threat vector requires new defensive strategies and international cooperation frameworks.
