Orca AI Launches 360-Degree Vision Platform — 1,000 Vessels Installed, Autonomy Foundations Advance
London-based Orca AI launched the next generation of its AI-driven operational platform on March 4, 2026, introducing seamless 360-degree field of view coverage around vessels — a capability the company positions as both a major situational awareness upgrade for bridge teams and a foundational requirement for safe autonomous operations. The configuration uses three SeaPod lookout units, each equipped with high-sensitivity RGB and thermal cameras that work together to deliver continuous full-perimeter coverage and unified situational awareness. Eliminating blind spots: The 360° FOV addresses a persistent operational challenge for navigators — detecting vessels approaching from astern, piracy threats, and small fast-moving craft that fall outside traditional forward-facing camera coverage or that radar struggles to consistently track. Structural obstructions from cranes, wind rotor sails, and deck equipment create line-of-sight limitations that the multi-unit configuration overcomes. The system enables compliance with Rule 13 of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea by detecting overtaking vessels that bridge teams might otherwise miss. Scale and market traction: The Orca AI platform is now installed on approximately 1,000 vessels worldwide, with a further 1,500 vessels under contract — representing one of the largest computer vision deployments in commercial shipping. The technology previously supported the first commercial autonomous voyage in 2022 in partnership with The Nippon Foundation and is now being used within the Designing the Future of Full Autonomous Ships (DFFAS+) initiative. CTO and co-founder Dor Raviv stated the development will expand beyond computer vision to include machine-learning capabilities for predictive insights and voyage optimisation. Strategic context for ship managers: This announcement directly follows up on our tracking of the machine vision competitive landscape. While SEA.AI won Euromaritime recognition and the Hefring/SEA.AI partnership offers combined efficiency-plus-safety solutions, Orca AI's 360° FOV and fleet scale — combined with its Co-Captain vessel-to-vessel data sharing network — positions the company as the dominant single-vendor bridge AI provider for large commercial fleets. Ship managers evaluating navigation technology investments now face clear differentiation between Orca AI's vertically-integrated platform approach and the best-of-breed partnership model emerging among European maritime technology providers.
