DNV and Kongsberg Maritime Wire Their Platforms Together — The Plumbing AI Actually Needs

On 4 June, DNV and Kongsberg Maritime signed an agreement to enable secure, standardised exchange of Operational Vessel Data (OVD) between Kongsberg Maritime's digital fleet-management solution and DNV's Veracity platform. It is not a flashy AI product, but it addresses the single biggest reason maritime AI underdelivers: data that cannot move cleanly between systems. How it works: the integration is built on DNV's Operational Vessel Data interface standard plus API technology, letting owners share operational data between the two platforms in a controlled, scalable way while keeping full control over how their data is used. The stated aim is to cut the duplicate reporting, inconsistent figures and manual rekeying that still plague digitalised fleets, and to give downstream services — digital assurance, operational insight, future data-driven applications — a trustworthy feed to draw on. The named-customer proof: Wisby Tankers is already using the integration and reports it has resolved several data-quality issues and improved reporting consistency, specifically streamlining voyage reporting and bunker delivery note handling. Mikkel Skou, executive director of Veracity by DNV, called standardised, trusted access to operational data "fundamental to accelerating digital assurance," while Kongsberg's Anders Bryhni stressed that stronger integration reduces manual work and improves data quality. Why this matters for ship managers: this is the quiet foundation under every AI ambition. Models, dashboards and agents are only as good as the data feeding them, and most fleets still lose time reconciling figures across siloed tools. A standardised, owner-controlled pipe between a major fleet-management system and a classification society's data platform is the kind of interoperability that makes CSRD, FuelEU and EU MRV reporting auditable rather than artisanal. The practical lesson: when evaluating any AI tool, ask first whether it can ingest and exchange your data on open standards — because the foundation, not the model, is usually the bottleneck.
