Amphitrite Achieves 10% Fuel Savings Using NVIDIA Earth-2 Ocean Current Prediction

French startup Amphitrite, founded by expert oceanographers and a member of the NVIDIA Inception program, has demonstrated 10% carbon emissions reduction for a Mediterranean shipping line using AI-powered ocean current and weather prediction built on NVIDIA's Earth-2 platform and H100 GPUs. The company distinguishes itself from general weather modeling services through domain-specific expertise that enables fine-scale routing optimization accounting for ocean surface currents within the first 10 meters—critical data for minimizing fuel consumption—alongside extreme wave and wind predictions for safety planning. Major shipping companies including CMA-CGM, Genavir, Louis Dreyfus Armateurs, and Orange Marine are among the enterprises using Amphitrite's AI models to optimize operations. Technical architecture: Amphitrite trains and runs AI models using NVIDIA H100 GPUs both on premises and in cloud environments, building on the FourCastNet model—part of NVIDIA's Earth-2 platform—to develop computer vision models for wave prediction. Evangelos Moschos, cofounder and CTO, explained that "fusing AI and satellite imagery, Amphitrite can improve the accuracy of global ocean current analyses by up to 2x compared with traditional methods." The models process public satellite data from NASA and the European Space Agency, including Sentinel-3 data and information from the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission jointly operated by NASA and French space agency CNES. Commercial value proposition: Alexandre Stegner, cofounder and CEO, described the current moment as "a turning point on the modernization of oceanic atmospheric forecasting," noting a wide portfolio of applications for domain-specific oceanographic AI models with energy transition and environmental applications as primary focus areas. The AI provides insights on positioning vessels to best harness ocean currents, optimizing both travel timing and routing to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions. NVIDIA partnership benefits: Through NVIDIA Inception, Amphitrite gained technical support for on-premises infrastructure development, free cloud credits for GPU instances on Amazon Web Services, and opportunities to collaborate with NVIDIA experts on simulation technologies. The company emphasized their technical achievement in developing a female-founded company addressing critical maritime efficiency challenges through cutting-edge AI technology. [NVIDIA]
